17 - Lakas-CMD link with Communist Party of China, product of JdV's inventive mind

Former Senator Heherson Alvarez hailed House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. as an acknowledged statesman, an imaginative leader and world legislator when he forged a fraternal relationship between the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats and the Communist Party of China.

Alvarez, who was in Dagupan City on Sunday, said at first, all the party members were caught flat-footed if not dumbfounded by De Venecia's move because they could not see the point why Christian Democrats will have to work with communists from China.

But seven months later, when the communist leaders from the different provincial committees started visiting the Philippines, he said, they began to understand that such fraternal relationship was vital.

Last week, a four-man team from the international department of the Communist Party of China, headed by its director general Ai Ping, was in the Philippines to observe the election campaign on De Venecia's invitation.

The group visited Dagupan City.

"This fraternal relationship with the Communist Party of China is vital because the so-called members of the Communist Party of China have become normal party leaders. They are like party leaders of many other countries of the world and are looking for understanding, friendship and cooperation," Alvarez explained.

Being a much bigger and richer country, he said, China could extend assistance to the Philippines.

The former senator said Speaker De Venecia's move of bringing the Philippines closer to China by making Lakas-CMD a fraternal party to the communist party in China "brought in great many support packages."

This paved the way for the construction of expressways, schools, big irrigation systems, railroads and many others, including oil exploration in the Spratlys.

"China has now become an investor in our internal development, in our modernization process. They are one of the biggest investors in mining development, in the railway system, road-building construction and in building schools," Alvarez said.

He said this singular feat of De Venecia showed that he is an imaginative leader who can link not only the region's powerful economic players but also enable this relationship to solve the eternal problem of poverty in the Philippines.

Alvarez said De Venecia is a nation-builder as he has always been in his function as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He hailed De Venecia as a miracle worker who did many things not only for Pangasinan "but to all of us". (PNA)
