OSMEŅA IS A 'LOOSE CANNON' IN K-4-ALVAREZ

January 23, 2004

Former Senator Heherson T. Alvarez today reminded Sen. John Osmeņa that former President Fidel V. Ramos is a "key ally and supporter" of the K-4 Koalisyon that took him in despite the criticisms the administration received for including Estrada loyalists in its Senate slate.

"This kind of charge is a loose cannon charge. This is highly speculative. You do not accuse a former President and chairman emeritus of Lakas-CMD unless you have hard evidences," he stressed.

Alvarez was reacting to Osmena's accusation that the former President, through former National Security Adviser Jose Almonte, was involved in an alleged 'hatchet job' on presidential aspirant Fernando Poe, Jr. regarding the action king's citizenship.

"It is very imprudent for someone who is a guest candidate in the administration coalition to criticize President Ramos, a pillar of Lakas-CMD which leads the coalition," he said.

When Osmeņa accused the former President, he was indirectly attacking President Arroyo, Alvarez said.

"It's obvious that he holds no respect for a key ally and supporter of the K-4 and, by extension, for President Arroyo herself. So how can he remain in the K-4 ticket? If he has any sense of decency left, he knows what to do," Alvarez said.

Earlier, Alvarez resigned as Lakas-CMD spokesman after expressing extreme displeasure over the inclusion of Osmena and other Estrada loyalists in the administration's Senate ticket.

He noted that the Estrada stalwarts were the very same people who loudly opposed the impeachment, questioned the President's legitimacy, condemned EDSA Dos and the constitutional processes, and supported the disgraced leader in defying the jurisdiction of the Sandiganbayan over the plunder case filed against him.
