More defections to Lakas seen as opposition spat contines – Alvarez

December 9, 2003

Lakas-CMD party spokesperson and senatorial aspirant Heherson T. Alvarez foresees more defections to the administration camp as the date of the filing of certificates of candidacies of both national and local candidates nears.

“While the opposition side has yet to meet, the ruling party is busy reunifying the different political factions at the local levels under the Lakas banner,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez, who is also Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Communities, cited the defection of eleven Bulacan mayors, most of whom formerly belonged to the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), to the administration party as a manifestation of the snowballing support for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“We are impressed with Foreign Affairs Secretary Blas F. Ople for leading the exodus of Bulacan local leaders as the newest members of the ruling party. He also agreed to assume the role of chairman of the Lakas Policy Advisory Council and co-chairman for the Central Luzon region,” Alvarez added.

Led by Secretary Ople, the list of those sworn in as Lakas members included Mayors Danny Domingo, Malolos; Felix Ople, Hagonoy; Rolando Salvador, Baliuag; Toti Reyes, Bustos; Jaime Viceo, San Rafael; Elpidio Castillo, Pulilan; Saso Galvez, San Ildefonso; Eduardo Roquero, San Jose del Monte City; Santi Sevilla, San Miguel; and Rolando Javier, Plaridel.

The congressman for Bulacan’s second district, Congressman Wilfrido Villarama, also took his oath with the LDP mayors as a Lakas member.
